Show Notes

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has arrived with enormous hype, a massive budget, an all-star cast, and the weight of one of the greatest stories ever told.

But is it actually a great film?

In this episode of Story Joy, we take a close look at Nolan's ambitious adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey and ask whether all the spectacle lives up to the promise.

We discuss the casting of Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus; Nolan's distinctive visual style; the film's use of flashbacks; its anti-war themes; and the decision to reshape some of the more morally complicated elements of Homer's original story.

We also explore one of the biggest questions surrounding the adaptation: what happens when you take a complicated, sometimes selfish, morally ambiguous Greek hero and turn him into a more conventional family man?

The original Odyssey is strange, funny, adventurous, morally messy and surprisingly entertaining. Did Nolan capture what makes the story endure—or did he flatten it into something safer and more familiar?

We also discuss Emily Wilson's influential translation, Nolan's recurring treatment of female characters, the film's dialogue and pacing, its 70mm/IMAX presentation, and whether all that cinematic craftsmanship ultimately adds up to a satisfying movie.

Our verdicts? Let's just say we're nowhere near the early "masterpiece" consensus.

Is The Odyssey a masterpiece, an ambitious misfire, or something in between?
